23rd April 2009 Seminar with the Financial Services Commission
John Davies, Executive Director of the CCM, spoke at a seminar organized by the FSC, together with the Executive Director of the FSC, Milan Meetarbhan, and the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Business, Enterprise and Co-operatives, Reshad Hosany. Speakers discussed the new competition regime, with particular reference to the financial sector. The CCM and the FSC have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding setting out how they will work together in the event of competition concerns in activities regulated by the FSC. 5th March 2009 Workshop with the MCCI at the Vivekananda Centre, Les Pailles
John Davies, Executive Director of the CCM, spoke at a workshop organized by the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Following an introduction and speeches from representatives of the MCCI and Mr. Reshad Hosany, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Business, Enterprise and Co-Operatives, Mr. Davies gave a presentation on competition policy and the expected work of the CCM. 9th July 2009 Seminar for legal practitioners
The CCM, in collaboration with the Bar Association of Mauritius and the Law Society of Mauritius, held a seminar titled “Bringing the Competition Act into effect”, on July 9th in the Council Chamber of the Municipality of Port Louis. Presentations, and two discussion sessions, focused on legal aspects of the plan to bring the Competition Act 2007 fully into effect before the end of 2009.
Shaukat Oozeer, President of the Bar Association, introduced the first session, at which John Davies, Executive Director of the CCM, spoke on ‘The new Competition Law and the legal practice’ [slides] and Avish Kalicharan, Senior Investigator at the Competition Commission of South Africa spoke on ‘The work of the South African Competition Commission’ [slides].
Manon Mardemootoo, President of the Law Society, introduced the second session at which Eric Ribot, Barrister at Law, spoke on ‘The Development of Competition Law in Mauritius’ and Kiran Meetarbhan, Acting Legal Director at the CCM, spoke on ‘The Competition Act 2007’ [slides]
Rajesh Ramloll of the State Law Office acted as MC and Sanjeev Ghurburrun, Barrister at Law, led two lively discussion sessions.
